Produce On Wheels (POW!) Delivery
Produce On Wheels (POW!)
To increase our senior and homebound recipient’s access to fresh produce, a new program was developed, free of charge to home delivered meal recipients, called POW! (Produce On Wheels). POW! launched in October of 2015 after a needs assessment revealed the true wants and needs of the senior and homebound neighbors we serve.
POW! deliveries are meant to provide 4-5 healthy snacks. Bags might include: a head of lettuce, a tomato, green pepper, 2 oranges, and a banana. Each month, recipients will receive an educational handout (offered in both english and spanish) in the bag that has information on produce safety, easy recipes, the health benefits of what’s in the bag, tips on how to reduce waste, and a comments section.
Volunteers deliver the POW! bag of fresh fruits and veggies to all meal recipients on the 3rd Saturday of each month. Recipients must be home to receive the bag.
“I just wanted to let you know what a great day it was to deliver produce. Everyone was so glad to see us. They were so excited to get fresh fruit and veggies. POW made their day! Thank you for allowing me to be part of this very special day!” -Mona, Volunteer. Another volunteer recalled that her kids had a blast “delivering bags of smiles”.
