Meals on Wheels of Tampa volunteers making sure seniors are not forgotten on Thanksgiving

TAMPA – On Thanksgiving, everyone has their own tradition.

Thirty years ago, Jan Costello started delivering for Meals on Wheels of Tampa.

She’s making sure homebound seniors are not forgotten over the holidays.

“They are not going to leave their house and join a gathering with family,” said Costello.

This year, she’s taking the whole family along, but this is more than just a delivery.

It’s a chance to put a smile on someone’s face, like Bertha Callaway, who’s alone. She’s one of 700 seniors getting a visit from volunteers.

Something as simple as a conversation goes a long way.

“They are like family to me,” said Callaway, “I really appreciate them doing this for me.”

The cards, flowers and baked goods she received are just another thing to be thankful for.

“It shows they appreciate you. This is beautiful,” said Callaway.

Costello said it’s the least she could do on a day when giving means so much.

“It just touched my heart, and I think half of us were in tears,” said Costello.
