TAMPA, Fla. – (September 29, 2010) – Meals On Wheels of Tampa awarded Mary Rose Owens, of Temple Terrace, the Amy Shimberg Volunteer of the Year Award for her 35 years of service to Meals On Wheels of Tampa.
Mary Rose Owens began volunteering for Meals On Wheels of Tampa the day the doors opened in 1975. Currently Ms. Owens is a Route Coordinator for our Temple Terrace Distribution Site. As a Route Coordinator, she recruits volunteers, assigns routes, trains new volunteers and oversees the day to day operations. Earlier this year, Ms. Owens played a significant role in helping Meals On Wheels of Tampa expand their service to the homebound and seniors in the Temple Terrace community. The Amy Shimberg Volunteer of the Year Award was created in 2007 in honor of Ms. Amy Shimberg. Amy is a humble and dedicated volunteer who has delivered hot, healthy meals to the homebound and seniors of our community every Wednesday for 35 years and continues to do so today. The award was created so Meals On Wheels of Tampa could recognize one volunteer each year who exemplifies dedication and commitment through selfless service to our organization. Past winners of the Amy Shimberg Volunteer of the Year Award have been: Ms. Amy Shimberg (2007), Ms. Margaret Goodson (2008), Mr. Ben Coleman (2009), Ms. Mary Rose Owens (2010).
Volunteers like Mary Rose Owens are the heart and soul of Meals On Wheels of Tampa, delivering hot, nutritious meals and touching the lives of the homebound and seniors in our community.
