TAMPA, Fla –
Meals on Wheels of Tampa has been serving the community since 1975, helping the elderly and disable receive daily meals at no cost.
Starting today, they’ve teamed up with Feeding Tampa Bay to launch a new program called Produce on Wheels. For the next few months volunteers will deliver once a month, fresh produce to their current food recipients.
Lauren Vance, Director of Communications for Meals on Wheels, says this idea came to fruition after conducting a survey with all the home delivery meal recipients.
“Our seniors wanted fresh produce, they wanted the additional Saturday delivery,” explains Vance.
Lauri Wright, volunteer and nutrition expert, says this program is a great way to keep the homebound eating fresh food.
“With this new partnership, we are able to provide these fruits and vegetables at the fraction of the cost,” says Wright.
Produce on Wheels will continue their once a month drop off until February of 2016. According to Vance, they are hoping to expand the program to twice a week by early next year with the help of grants and donations.
