In an effort to provide the safest and best possible service to Tampa’s frailest neighbors, Meals On Wheels of Tampa has put together a plan to manage the unprecedented potential impact of COVID-19 (Coronavirus).
By necessity, Meals On Wheels of Tampa’s number one priority is the safety of the hundreds of recipients we serve, our volunteers and our staff. A vast majority of our Meals on Wheels recipients struggle with underlying medical conditions like diabetes, heart disease, and compromised immune systems, which can make them particularly vulnerable to any number of diseases, including this strain of novel coronavirus known as COVID-19.
At this time, Meals On Wheels of Tampa has cancelled all non-essential events. Surfaces throughout the building are being regularly disinfected. Volunteers who have traveled to areas with high contagion-risks and/or cruise ships are required to wait 14 days before delivering meals. Staff and volunteers are to remain home if they show signs of fever, cough or sore throat.
To limit contact, Meals On Wheels of Tampa has switched their delivery schedule to Tuesdays only until further notice. On Tuesdays, all recipients will receive a 5-day frozen meal pack which will cover Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and the following Monday. Those recipients that receive weekend meals will receive an additional two meals. The 5-day frozen meal packs will be prepared by Chef Tony and our kitchen team. To cover the daily safety check, Meals On Wheels of Tampa is arranging for volunteers and staff to make phone calls to those receiving meals to make sure all is well in their homes.
Support from the community would be greatly appreciated to cover the cost of the additional food and supplies needed to safely provide extra meals to current clients and to feed those additional people in need of home delivered meals who may not be able to afford them. Meals on Wheels of Tampa does not receive federal or state dollars, we rely exclusively on the support and compassion of our community.
